Wampanoag Visit

Featured Blogger: Marley
Hi. Wanna have some conversation or something? Oh, wait… I forgot what I’m here for! Right! I’m Marley, and just a few days ago, me and my class were visited by a Wampanoag man named Phillip! It was super fun. We even learned some native American words! Some of the words were just everyday words that we use normally, like moose, chipmunk, skunk, and pumpkin. But some were different, like, Que, which means hey or ‘sup, and there’s also wanee qeesak, which means it is good sky. He also told us about some of the funny things that the settlers did when they came. For example, he told us that when the settlers saw the skunk, they thought it was the land’s cat! And, when the settlers saw the moose, they said, “Oh. What a strange cow.” He also showed us some animal skins. I can’t say which one was my favorite, but I really liked skunk (de-stinkified) and beaver. Hopefully you liked my blog, my name’s Marley, if you’ve forgotten my name, and, well, thanks for reading!

We took some pictures showing Philip showing us some different Wampanoag items.

Theme Responses

Featured Blogger: Danielle
In reading we did something called Theme Responses. So basically we take a book from the white book bin and then read it with your turn and talk partner.  You might be asking what is a turn and talk partner?  Well a turn and talk partner is someone who reads a book with you and you think about the theme together.  After you read the book with your partner you get your reading notebook and at least jot down what the theme is. So we say I think the theme of the book is… After you do that I will tell you some themes for the book. So now these are the themes: kindness, courage, friendship, honesty, compassion, responsibility and perseverance. That's almost all of the themes. Then we write at least 5 sentences about the theme. For example, the theme of Flying High 2 is cooperation because they worked together and never gave up until they got it. When you jot down your 5 sentences you have to write at least 5 or 4 reasons to explain why you it think it is that theme. After you do that, make sure you give examples, details, etc=etcetera. I hoped you liked my blog, and learned about the theme responses.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Featured Blogger: Nathaniel
Hi I am Nathaniel and I am going to tell you about the movie “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”  So first we had to be good to get the reward. The way we got the reward was we had complete compliment bingo.  Also we had to fill out every single box in compliment bingo. Compliment bingo is a chart where we put the stickers that we earned.  Now the way we got a sticker was one of the other teachers gave us a compliment or we got four out of four stars in music or art.  Next we voted on what we thought our reward should be. The choices were extra recess, a lot of stem challenges, or a movie.  Our class voted on the movie.  Then on Wednesday we voted on what movie to watch. We ended up choosing the movie “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”  It was the best movie in the world!  Every kid in the class liked it!  The movie was full of surprises when you were not suspecting it. The main characters were Charlie, Grampa Joe, and Willy Wonka.  I would go to  the movie theater and watch this movie.  The movie is probably one of the best in the world.  (It is also rated G.)  So now remember to go to the movie theater and see that movie!

Model Cities

Featured Blogger: Sarah
In science we made model cities.  We studied urban runoff and the damage that it can cause.   At first we did an experiment on just a green roof.  A green roof is basically a  garden on top of a flat roof.  It has to be flat because it is a garden so if the roof is on a slant the plants and dirt will just roll off.  It is just to slow down the runoff.  We also did an experiment on permeable pavement.  A permeable pavement is a pavement that water can go through.
After that we made changes to our design to see what worked well and what didn’t.  Some kids brought home materials to make a model city.  Then we made a  whole city that had a lot of runoff solutions.  The cities were on a slant (hill) with water (a river) underneath it.  When we tested them we could choose from four different things to pollute it: food coloring, sprinkles, dish soap, and sequins.  Then we did  30 sprays of water and let the water absorb for 30 seconds.  Then we lifted up our cities and saw how much pollution it caused.  When we did our redesign we got what we learned from the last one to make this one better.  After that we had a showcase for 3N.  It was really fun presenting in front of another class.  When we tested them we saw how much we improved.  We loved seeing our improvements.

We loved doing it and we all want to do it again!!!!!!
This is a picture of a green roof that my group made.

Multicultural Assembly

Featured Blogger: Sammy
Hello, my name is Sammy. I am writing about the third grade Multicultural Assembly.
In third grade, you put on a show for the whole school, and guess what, your parents can even come too!!! First, in Library, we read a book. That book has a culture. This year the culture is Chinese. And the book is called The Lord Of The Cranes.
Next, in Art, we do an activity about the book we read in Library. This year we are doing birds of kindness because that has to do with cranes which is a bird.
After that, in Music, the whole school learns a song with that culture. As an add on to that, one of the positions is to play the music on your recorder.  The song on the recorder is usually pretty hard.
Last but not least, Gym. In Gym we all learn a dance that goes along with that culture.  This year we haven't learned the dance yet.
When we are all done with the specials, we get our positions for the show. Then we start putting everything together. When that starts happening, we go back to our specials to do the same thing, but this time, it’s for real.  In Library we read the several times to get the story in our head. And then in Art we make all of the props and costumes for the big show.  Now in Music, we learn all the songs on the recorder, and play the songs. Also in music, one of the positions is playing a instrument, so if you chose that, you learn what to play.  After that, in Gym, we learn all the moves and other dances. We also learn what to say and what to do for our role\part to play. When we are all done with those, we put it all together.

Oh, and PS, come to Lilja Elementary School on April 12th, 2018. See you there!
