Biographies

Featured Blogger: Kian

3Sp is doing biographies.  You get to choose a great changer.  A great changer is someone who changed people's lives in a good way.  I personally chose Muhammad Ali.  Everyone got to make a note card for when they were born and one for when they died.  Everyone also got to make at least three notecards about their great changer’s early life, 3 things that make them a great changer, and 3 things about their later life.  By the way did you know that Muhammad Ali’s real name is Cassius Clay?  Did you also know that when Cassius was 12 he was featured on a local TV show called Tomorrow's Champions?  It wasn’t exactly the next day he became a champion but he was definitely a champion.  Everyone is learning a lot about their great changer!

Flora and Ulysses

Featured Blogger: Tessa
In snack we are reading a new book. It is called Flora And Ulysses. Flora is a girl and Ulysses is a squirrel. Flora’s mom and dad got divorced. Ulysses get’s vacuumed up by the Ulysses 2000X when he gets vacuumed up his tail is sticking out of the Ulysses 2000X and that’s how it all began. Flora thought that Ulysses was dead but just to make sure, she pushed on its tiny belly and Ulysses heard singing and a voice saying “breath! breath!”
Ulysses wakes up after Flora’s mother goes inside Flora smuggles Ulysses inside but Ulysses gets into some mischief.  Ulysses eats some cheese puffs and he gets it all over his fingers. Ulysses writes on Flora’s mother’s typewriter and gets orange powder all over it and it’s her typewriter that she uses for work.  Flora’s mother thinks Flora did it because Flora’s mother doesn't know that Flora smuggled Ulysses in.  But then … Ms. Tootie has came over to talk to Flora about something.  But when Flora goes to get the page that Ulysses typed up and hides it under her pajama top.... Ulysses get’s into some trouble.  He goes on top of a lamp that her mother calls Mary Ann.  But Ms. Tootie and Flora’s mother see Ulysses and and her mother starts yelling “Flora Belle Flora Belle!  Come here right now.  This is not funny.”  But then Ms. Tootie’s nephew comes over and his name is William Spiver.  William Spiver says he is temporarily blind and he won’t take off his glasses.  The lenses of his glasses are dark so you can’t see his eyes. Then her mother says that they can’t live with a squirrel.  But then Flora says that Ulysses is special so what does she do?  You will have to read the book to find out!

The End

Making Noises

Featured Blogger: Matt
In 3Sp we are making noises with recycling materials.  It was so so so fun!  A scale of  1 to 10: it was a 10.  Some people made drums and guitars.  We had to make a plan and draw our instrument.  Next we built our instrument. Some people used tissue boxes and other recycling materials. I made a drum mixed up with a guitar mixed up with a maraca.  Angel made a maraca.  Angel and I shared together because it would make louder noises.   Our instruments sounded loud together! We have to end it here. Bye!

Here are some pictures of how everyone’s instruments came out!

Author Visit! Geoff Edgers

Featured Blogger: Tess
Something awesome happened on the second day of May 2017. Geoff Edgers came to share about being an author! He is really funny! He shared for three third grade classes and two three-four classes! By the way, Geoff Edgers is my… wait for it… UNCLE! Here is some information about him!  My mom is his sister, he has two kids named Lila (age fourteen) and Calvin (age seven), he lives in West Concord, Massachusetts, his parents live in Brookline, Massachusetts, and I think that's pretty much it!
Geoff wrote four Who Was books. For example, Who Was/Were...   Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Julia Child, and Stan Lee. On the back of every book in the series there is a “quiz” that tells you things they did and it checks of all of the above.  For example, the Elvis book said, “Who Was Elvis Presley? A shy boy who was sometimes teased by other classmates, A singer who became famous when he was only twenty one, The man known around the world as the king of rock ‘n’ roll, or all of the above?” (D is the answer, by the way!)
Geoff told us about the writing process. First, he gets a lot, a lot, a lot of books on that topic or person.  Then, he writes a bunch of notes on the topic or person. After that, he returns all the books and gets ice cream, goes to the movies, orders an extra large pepperoni pizza, and goes out for a night with the guys!  Then he writes it by hand based on the notes and after that, he sends it to the agent. Then they correct it and he fixes it and he keeps going until they say that it’s acceptable and he types it on the computer and prints it out and sends it to the publisher and they print it.
After that, they send it to the illustrator and they make the illustration.  Then they send it to the publisher to get the cover and the quiz on the back.  Then the book is published to the public! This takes more than a year, or two, or three, or… seven to ten!  All of his books are super informational and very real!  So much information is packed inside the book, that you can write two biographies about the person or people!  Not saying you have to, but it will be cool if you do that! Well that's all for now folks! I hope you search up Geoff Edgers on Google Chrome so you know what he looks like! Also you should read his books too! Bye bye!

Multicultural Assembly Brazil

Featured Blogger: Sophie
This year at Lilja for the Multicultural Assembly we (the third graders) are doing a play from the book How Night Came From The Sea a folktale from Brazil.  How  Night Came From The Sea is about how night came from the sea.  This year we are going to have live scenery because this year we have the 3-4s.  The entire school learned a dance, a song, and made head bands.  Now I will tell you the story.
Long ago in Brazil there was only sun.  No moon, night, sunrise, or sunset.  In this time the great goddess Iemanja dwelt in the bottom of the sea with her daughter.  One day Lemanja’s daughter decided to marry one of the earth people.  So she left her underwater home. She met husband on the shore.  Her husband called her Ayomide . Ayomide loved her new home. She loved all the bright colors that they wore in their harvest festival.  After a couple of years Ayomide could not take all of the colors and the blazing sun.  Her eyes needed a rest. Her husband was sad that Ayomide wanted to go back to her mother's home.  So he called his most faithful servants to ask Lemanja to give them some night so his wife would be happy with him on land.  So they set out on there quest.  When the servants got to the palace of Lemanja they begged her to give them some night. But she warned them not to open the bag until they reached her daughter. So the servants started heading back. When they reached land they heard weird sounds. The first servant started to shake. The second servant said “Let us drop this bag of night and run away as fast as we can”. “Cowards” said the third. “I will open the bag of night and see what is making those sounds”. So he laid the bag on the ground and opened it. As soon as he opened the bag all the night creatures rushed out of the bag. It was a good thing Ayomide was waiting for their arrival when they opened the bag. When Ayomide spoke all the night spirits were calmed and there was a quiet darkness. Soon Ayomide fell asleep. When she awoke she felt very rested. Ayomide looked up and saw a glittering. Ayomide said  to the star “ Glittering star from now on you will be our sign that night is passing. You shall be called the morning star and you will announce the birth of each day. To a rooster standing next to her she said “You will be the watch man of the night. Your voice will warn us that light is coming”. She told the singing birds that they should sing their sweetest song to announce the dawn of each day. The End.

I hope you enjoyed the story! Bye!!!

Birdhouse STEAM Challenge with 2Cr

Featured Blogger: Ella

Hi I am ELLA and a few days ago my class 3Sp did a project with another class 2Cr. Now you might be wondering what a STEAM challenge is so that's what I'm going to tell you. The S stands for science, the T  is for technology, the E stands for engineering, the A stands for art, and the M stands for math.  We were assigned partners from the other class. We had to make a birdhouse out of recyclables. Me and my partner made a really good birdhouse and all of my friends did too. Our birdhouse was painted green, yellow, and blue.  It looked really good when we were done painting it. All the birdhouses had to have a perch for the bird, it had to look good and a bonus. The bonus thing was that it had to have a thing like a plate on the edge of the birdhouse. The plate thing is what the food goes on. Me and my partner did the bonus. It got a little hard at times but we did it!
This is some of the birdhouses that the classes made.
