School Days According to Humphrey

Featured Blogger: Molly
Hi I’m Molly from 3Sp and I’m going to teach you about Humphrey the hamster and what he thinks about school!  Humphrey is the main character in the story School Days According to Humphrey.  You might be wondering how this relates to 3Sp.  It relates to 3Sp because we read the story in the first month of school during snack time.

Humphrey has nicknames for the students in room 26 like Rolling Rosie, Hurry Up Harry, and Small Paul.  His best friends are Og and Aldo. Then Humphrey gets in trouble.  One night he sneaks out of room 26 and tries to find he’s old friends and where they went.  Then he got stuck under a door.  Luckily he got unstuck.  At first he didn’t like the new students.  Then he really likes the new students.  Yay!  Then he thinks he’s moving to another classroom and he would never ever see Og again.  But at the end of the story it wasn’t happening.  Then the class that he thought was going to take him got hermit crabs.  That is what Humphrey thinks about school.  3Sp loves this book because it’s funny, adventurous, and we wanted to read more every time we stopped!

Reflex Math

Featured Blogger: Gabe
Reflex Math helps us learn addition, subtraction, multiplication and division math facts.  Reflex Math also encourages kids to learn math facts with fun math games.  In one of the games you solve math problems to collect 4 keys and avoid the poacher.  In another game called “Ninja to the Stars” you play as a ninja and you need to solve math equations to jump from platform to platform and most platforms are good but some are bad and the bad ones have pop up spikes.  In another game called “Wind Rider” you solve math problems to keep a hot air balloon in the air and avoid obstacles.  In the warm-ups you race and in the race you solve math problems to move. You are 1 out of 4 racers and at the end of the race you get tokens no matter what.  In the warm-ups you also pop balloons and help a bunny jump over a ladder and a different bunny fly.  I hope you liked my blog and remember to play Reflex Math often.

Missing Factors

Featured Blogger: Marley
So, today on the blog, we have a subject. Oh, right! Where are my manners? My name is Marley, and our subject is math.  Well, a GAME in math. It’s called “Missing Factors.”
Playing:  Here are the things you need for playing: array cards (ask the best teacher EVER!), yourself, and a Missing Factors sheet (optional). So, let’s start playing. Spread out your array cards in front of you, array side down. Choose one. There is one number in the middle. That is the product. Now you will also see a smaller number on the side. That is one of the factors. Now all you have to do is guess the other factor. Once you guess the second factor, all you need to do is flip over the card and see if you are right. If you are right, keep the card. If you are not right, put it back and come back to it later.

I really like this game, and I think you will too. Remember, if you have any more questions, be sure to ask.

Fire Safety

Featured Blogger: Nicky
Hi my name is Nicky from 3Sp.  I will tell you about fire safety.  It is always good to have a fire plan and always have a plan in mind to escape the building immediately.  Do not grab anything when a fire is in progress. It will take too long to get outside. Always get to the meeting spot with everyone else. Guess who we got that information from?  OK, I will tell you. Chief Mike from the Natick Fire Department.  He came into our class and showed us a model home.  He taught us about not a leaving a room unattended with something hot in the room, and if it’s a pot you need to put the top on it so the steam doesn’t come out.  Don’t leave a plug on the edge of a sink because electricity and water is not a good combination.  We learned a lot from Firefighter Mike.

This is a picture of 3Sp and Firefighter Mike while he's showing us the model house.

3Sp Read-a-Thon!

One of the highlights from this week was meeting our goal for earning a whole class reward!  3Sp students have worked hard over the last several weeks to demonstrate Lilja’s core values and we celebrated with a read-a-thon!  Students brought in stuffed animals, pillows, and blankets to help them cozy up while reading some of their favorite books for our read-a-thon!

Giving Back with #WhalesForACause

Team 3Sp recently decorated whales inspired by our favorite books to help Pajama Program provide books to kids in need.  This was a great way to learn about the importance of helping others!
